STEP ONE: SKETCH ON CANVAS

I like to sketch directly on the canvas sheet when I can, to avoid having to transfer drawings. Sometimes I will come up with a nice drawing in one of my sketchbooks though, and to transfer that to canvas or watercolor paper I use my lightbox. In the case of this particular example however, I have just sketched on the canvas sheet without any transferring. At this stage the sketch is going to be pretty loose and messy looking. I like to add another coat or two of clear acrylic gesso on top of this so that the canvas is more smooth to work on. (Winsor & Newton makes clear acrylic gesso).
