TUTORIAL: DRAWING TREES WITH FACES (PART 2)

Here I have finished putting in the smaller branches that come out from the trunk.

Now we are ready to start drawing in bark! Everyone is going to have their own way of drawing the bark, it is as individual as doodling. I like mine to have a gnarly, twisted shape which basically involves a lot of wavy lines and flattened out ovals. Again here is a good place to study what bark looks like on different trees and experiment with whichever styles you like.

I also like to put hollows in my trees. This usually means an elongated cat's eye shape that is shaded in. I also shade in the contours of my bark.

Continuing up the tree with my bark patterns. On the left you can see I've made it a bit like irregular ladders going up. Sorry about the lighting weirdness! My camping trip didn't provide a lot of uniform light, heheh.

More filling in and shading of bark. I have also added two elongated U shapes to start the eyes.
Here is a nose and mouth! I like to make tree faces rather crooked to match the gnarly bark that will be integrated into them. The trick is to make them look like a natural part of the tree and not just pasted on -- so however you usually make faces, it might be a good idea to mutate it a bit!
